Audit log & state recovery

Add or extend audit log and state recovery feature using the example of Dynatrace

An audit log stores configuration changes for traceability of system change and behavior. It is an important component for the operation of critical or security-relevant infrastructures and application systems. The blog post shows an alternative implementation of an audit log using the example of Dynatrace SaaS & Managed including a state recovery with Versio.io.

See Versio.io audit log & configurations recovery for Dynatrace in action

In the following example, you can see how a Dynatrace Dashboard misconfiguration is recovered via the Versio.io audit log and state recovery functionality.

What added value does the Versio.io audit log & recovery mechanism provide?

With Versio.io an existing system or application without audit log and state recovery can be extended easily. However, our example application Dynatrace already has an internal audit log function. The following additional benefits of the audit log are motivation for using Versio.io:
  • Unlimited data availability - Versio.io delivers Dynatrace configuration history about the whole lifecycle for each configuration (30 day in Dynatrace SaaS)
  • User-friendly UI management - In Versio.io provides user friendly GUI for displaying and manage all audit logs audit logs, change, verification and recovery (use only via API in Dynatrace SaaS).
  • Customized verification of Dynatrace configurations - Each change of a Dynatrace configuration recorded in Versio.io can be verified in terms of content. This ensures governance & compliance (adherence to naming conventions, anti-patterns for configurations, etc.). Detected violations can be used in the form of events for notification or forwarded to other systems.
  • Restoring a configuration state - A configuration state from the past can be easily restored from the UI in Dynatrace.
  • Auditable & reportable - The complete change history of each individual Dynatrace configuration is available in an audit-proof manner and is reportable.

How it works!

Capture all Dynatrace configuration changes fully automated and continuously

Versio.io continuously captures all Dynatrace configuration changes in the asset & configuration repository. An audit-proof change history is available for each individual configuration.

The following Dynatrace configurations can be captured and restored if a corresponding API service exists:

  • Alerting profile configuration
  • Application anomaly detection configuration
  • Auto tag configuration
  • Aws anomaly detection configuration
  • Aws credential
  • Aws private link configuration
  • Azure credential
  • Cloud foundry credential
  • Conditional naming host configuration
  • Conditional naming process group configuration
  • Conditional naming service configuration
  • Credential
  • Dashboard
  • Data privacy configuration
  • Database anomaly detection configuration
  • Frequent issue detection configuration
  • Host anomaly detection configuration
  • Kubernetes credential
  • Notification configuration
  • One agent configuration
  • Plugin configuration
  • Remote environment configuration
  • Report configuration
  • Service anomaly detection configuration
  • Threshold
  • Vmware anomaly detection configuration

Detect change in Dynatrace monitoring configuration in business real time

In Versio.io live change tracking you can monitor and detect any change in the monitoring configuration that affects the behavior of Dynatrace, as well as the infrastructure covered by Dynatrace.

Special filters allow you to limit the live tracking of the change e.g. only to the monitoring configuration or the monitored infrastructure.

Restore any state from the history of a Dynatrace configuration in a minute

Restore any state from the history of a Dynatrace configuration in a minute

Based on the captured and historized Dynatrace configurations, any state from the past can be restored.

The recovery can be executed directly from the user interface. Alternatively, a generated cURL statement is provided for execution on the command line.

Upgrade any system without an audit log

The Versio.io audit log and system configuration recovery approach demonstrated here can be applied to any application or IT system. So if any of your systems do not have an audit log, you can upgrade them quickly and inexpensively with Versio.io. You are welcome to talk to me!
